That's a huge question you asked - motivating a seriously involved disengaged. What level are you teaching? High school? I alwyas maintain that you can't really teach a student until you have a relationship with him or her. So I'd start out by understanding what he's interested in and continuing to hang in there with him so that he comes to believe that you will not give up on him. You could set up a behavior plan based on a reward that he will work for. See the Intervention Central website for some help with this.

Hello! I am a new LD SPED teacher. I started school off great! The last couple of days have been a challenge. Some of my children are having a difficult time adjusting to a new school. Already have a child kicked out of school and another that had a serious melt down yesterday. I am exhausted but still plugging along. Does anyone have new suggestions on motivating a disengaged student with serious emotional disruption?
